Such a Long Way

Perseverance is a feature I found hardest to learn.

Nowadays, I’d be closer to say: “quitting is never an option”. Even if it is, you’d better not count it as one. Allowing quitting as an option, separates us from numerous opportunities – professionally or personally. Because in many cases, it’s just this one last step to get over the dip.

Bob Parsons added one point on quitting to his 16 Rules Poster:

When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think.
There’s an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”

I love to think of many professional (and personal) initiatives as marriage. The quality of a personal relationship is often measured by perseverance (tolerance, understanding etc.). Setbacks are part of the deal. We are in it together no matter what. With time, when looking back, we often think: “My, my, such a long way. I’m glad we are still walking side by side.”

Digressing…

A popular quote attributed to Sir Winston Churchill goes like this:

“Never give up, Never give up, never give up.”

The actual version (Harrow School, 29 October 1941):

“Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”
